85th Annual Banquet speaker: Brian Jordan, former Cardinals, Braves, Dodgers, & Rangers outfielder!

Brian Jordan, a multi-talented baseball star whose 15-year baseball career included stints with the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and Los Angeles Dodgers, will be the featured speaker at the 85th annual Old Timers banquet.

In 1,456 games over fifteen seasons, Jordan posted a .282 batting average and finished his career with a .988 fielding percentage playing at all three outfield positions and first base.

Jordan is an Emmy award-winning sports analyst for Bally Sports South and the founder of the Brian Jordan Foundation.

Since 1999 the Old Timers Baseball Association of Nashville has awarded over 300 scholarships worth $625,000, presented at the annual banquet held each year.

2023 scholarship applications are being accepted from any high school senior baseball player in the Nashville area. The deadline to submit is December 15, 2022; an application is available on the organization’s website at otbaseball.com.

The banquet is scheduled for Sunday, January 15, at the Sonesta Nashville Airport, formerly the Marriott. The banquet doors open at 6:00, and the event begins at 6:30 PM. Bucky Dent to be Speaker at 2021 Old Timers Banquet

NASHVILLE, TN – April 5, 2021 – Bucky Dent, who spent 12 years in the majors, most notably with the New York Yankees, will be featured speaker at the 83rd annual Old Timers banquet, scheduled for Sunday, May 16, 2021, at the Sonesta Nashville Airport, formerly the Marriott.

A three-time All-Star, Dent is notable for hitting a three-run home run that gave the Yankees a 3–2 lead in the AL East division tie-breaker game on October 2, 1978, against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees won the game, 5-4, to earn a spot in the American League championship series against the Kansas City Royals, won by New York three games to one.

In the World Series against the Dodgers, Dent batted .417 on 10 hits in 24 at-bats and drove in seven runs, and was voted Most Valuable Player of the Series. Dent spent his entire 12-year major league career in the American League with the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, and Kansas City Royals with a .247 batting average and 423 RBI.

Upon retirement, he became a manager in the Yankees organization with Ft. Lauderdale and Columbus and was named New York manager for the last 40 games of the 1989 season before being fired by owner George Steinbrenner after 49 games of the 1990.

He served as a coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and Cincinnati Reds, and managed the Omaha Royals, a Kansas City affiliate, in 2002, and returned to Columbus for three seasons beginning in 2003.

Baseball Advisor to Music City Baseball Leadership Team

NASHVILLE, TN – November 16, 2020 – Old Timers president Carter Brown is pleased to announce Dave Dombrowski as guest speaker at the organization’s 83rd annual banquet to be held Wednesday, January 13, 2021. The event will be held at the Nashville Airport Marriot, 600 Marriott Dr, Nashville, TN 37214 beginning at 6:30 PM.

With over 40 years of service, Dombrowski is recognized as one of the most successful executives in Major League Baseball. Under his leadership his clubs have amassed well over 2,000 wins, won four pennants and two World Series titles.

He has served as President of Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox, President, CEO and General Manager of the Detroit Tigers, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Florida Marlins and General Manager of the Montreal Expos.

Dombrowski is on the MCB Baseball Advisory team, and as a consultant he is sharing his experience and expertise with MCB in order to bring Major League Baseball to Nashville.

Since 1999, 255 scholarships worth over $530,000 have been presented to worthy senior high school senior baseball players in the mid-state area. The application is available on the organization’s website at otbaseball.com/scholarships.

Board Member Bart Leathers Has Passed Away

Served As Organization’s President 2015-2016

NASHVILLE, TN – December 26, 2018 – Today has been a tough one for the Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association and so many others, as we mourn the loss of a board member and Old Timers past President, Bart Leathers. Bart passed away suddenly earlier this morning.

Bart was recently notified that he was the recipient of the Old Timers 2019 “Mr. Baseball” award, one of the highest honors recognized by our organization, and to be acknowledged at our upcoming banquet on January 16.

Please join us in lifting Bart’s wife Marilyn, the Leathers family, and everyone else that Bart touched in thoughts and prayers. Funeral arrangements are forthcoming.

Old Timers Banquet to Feature Sonny Gray. Smyrna and Vanderbilt pitcher was 2015 American League All Star

NASHVILLE, TN – November 28, 2018 – Major League pitcher Sonny Gray will be featured speaker at the 81st annual Old Timers banquet, scheduled for Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the Nashville Airport Marriott.

A product of Smyrna High School, Gray was selected to play in the AFLAC All-American High School Baseball Classic. A three-year football letterman as quarterback of Smyrna's 5A State championship teams in 2006 and 2007, he was a four-year letterman in baseball, hitting .518 during his senior year. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 27th round of the 2008 amateur draft, but did not sign.

In his first season at Vanderbilt he was named to Louisville Slugger’s Freshman All-American team after going 5-1 with a 4.30 ERA, and was a second-team All-SEC choice as a sophomore when he won 10 games and led the team in strikeouts with 113. He helped the Commodores earn their first College World Series berth his junior year when he had a 12–4 record with a 2.43 ERA and 132 strikeouts.

Drafted by Oakland as the 18th pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, he signed with the Athletics, foregoing his senior year at Vanderbilt. His minor league stops included the Midland Rock Hounds and Sacramento River Cats before he earned a callup to Oakland in 2013. In 2015 he was 14–7 with a 2.73 ERA, was selected to the All Star team, and finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting. In five seasons with Oakland he was 44-36 before being traded to the New York Yankees on July 31, 2017.

Old Timers Scholarship Application Deadline December 15 

At the annual Old Timers banquet each January scholarships are awarded to worthy high school senior baseball players. Nearly $450,000 has been presented in the past 19 years and we are currently accepting applications for our 2018 honorees.
